Hold True started life as a motif written on a borrowed six string bass. The extra strings gave a new way of looking at the instrument. We were experimenting with switching between 4/4 and 3/4 time, and this gave rise to what is now the intro of the song. Jon and Tim re-worked the parts to suit the string quartet, and electric guitar and harp play together to work as a question and answer to the vocals. This is one of the first pieces of music we wrote after embarking on our collaborative project with NEW Sinfonia, so we were really keen to explore the different tonal possibilities available with classical instruments.
Lyrically, the song is based around the internal conflicts we have when we're out of our comfort zone, or when we're trying something that we wouldn't ever consider doing unless we had encouragement from others. Should we follow our heart, or listen to our head?
lyrics
As you feel, gazing eyes
Smouldering the flesh
As the blood boils
Searching for
Calming thoughts
As the words are fighting
To escape the tongue
Hold, on
A deep fervour
A delicate balance
You, are
Captive to your thoughts
Hold, true
A deep fervour
A delicate balance
You, are
Captive to your thoughts
As the war, rages on
Swallowed by the conflict from within
Every twist, every turn
Hostility remains
Amid your soul
